I had been wanting to shoot some spectacular sand dunes for some time now and had researched Little Sahara on Kangaroo Island back in 2009. It wasn't until early 2012 that I was able to make time to get over there as it was a long drive from my new hometown of Tura Beach (18 hours).
I arrived on the Island accompanied by my best mate Matt and we visited a number of locations of interest to scope out compositions and best times of the day to revisit. Little Sahara was one of them and when we arrived it was literally unbearable in the midday heat. The sand was so scorching hot that it was impossible to climb up the first dune. We gave up and decided to come back again at sunset when the sand had cooled for the day. The second day of our trip the light was looking promising in the late afternoon so we headed off from our campground. We were very happy to find the sand was much cooler and we headed into the dunes exploring them barefoot.
I find shooting sand dunes quite difficult, particularly because you can't afford to get any footprints in your composition. This means you need to get the composition perfect the first time you setup as you simply can't afford to walk backwards!
I found a particular dune that I liked and started to setup my gear. The sky lit up nicely soon afterwards and I nailed this shot with the beautiful sunset colours glowing above the sand dune. |
