I have attempted to shoot this magnificent shipwreck relic many times before over the past 5 years or so but have always been let down by average light. I finally nailed some nice light down there however this particular visit was not planned at all. It eventuated from a very unusual set of circumstances that I believe were orchestrated perfectly by God.
I had driven to Melbourne to install some framed prints in a gallery the day before and had been lucky to make it there. The Princes Highway had only just re-opened that very morning after a bushfire. Although under control, some of the trees were still burning around me as I drove through which was an interesting experience to say the least. The very next day I awoke and started the return drive home only to get an hour out of Melbourne before I encountered another road closure. This time it was due to severe flooding that had happened overnight! Although I was now stranded, I was determined to make the most of it, so although the weather forecast predicted further rain, I thought I might drive in the opposite direction down the Great Ocean Road and hope for some nice light (despite the weather). The sunset at the 12 apostles was very ordinary but the next morning after an uncomfortable night sleeping in the back of my Nissan Pathfinder, I hiked down Wreck Beach to this magnificent anchor and was greeted by some beautiful morning light as the sun shone through the rain clouds. I captured this peaceful photograph and then commenced the 10 hour drive home again!
