When we first arrived at Little Sahara, the conditions were unbearable in the midday summer heat. The sand was so scorching hot that it was impossible to climb up the first dune. We gave up and decided to come back again at sunset when the sand had cooled for the day. The next day the light was looking promising in the late afternoon so we headed back. The sand was much cooler so we ditched our shoes and headed into the dunes exploring them barefoot.
I find shooting sand dunes quite difficult, particularly because you can't afford to get any footprints in your composition. This means you need to get the composition perfect the first time you setup as you simply can't afford to walk backwards! It is also hard to know exactly how the light will fall once the sun is near the horizon.
When I first discovered this dune the sun was directly behind me and there were no shadows. It looked fairly uninteresting but within a matter of minutes it changed completely. I captured this stunning scene just as the last light of the day shone beautifully over the sand dune before disappearing a few seconds later.
