Kaikoura is a place that has fascinated me for many years. The landscape that surrounds Kaikoura is incredible - rugged snow covered alps that drop straight into the ocean. There are not many places like this in the world!
During my first trip to New Zealand I didn't bother visiting Kaikoura because it was Autumn and there was no snow on the Kaikoura ranges. On my second trip it was the end of Winter and there was strong potential for snow on the peaks. When I arrived it was dark so I couldn't see much but planned to rise early and capture the sunrise the next morning.
I awoke the next morning an hour before sunrise and could just make out the awe-inspiring mountains along with some beautiful colour starting to appear on the horizon. I attempted to drive down to the edge of the coast and managed to get lost in a cul-de-sac high above the edge of the water - all the while watching the colours in the sky intensify! I started to get a little frustrated by my lack of early morning navigational skills however pulled myself together and 15 minutes later found a way down to the water's edge. It was just in time to find this composition and capture the beautiful light appearing across the tops of the ranges just as the sun hit the horizon.
I returned to show my wife this magical place an hour or so later but by then a change had rolled in and the peaks were completely covered by cloud, you couldn't see any snow at all. It stayed the same for the next 3 days. I sure was blessed to capture this light on the first morning.
