Located deep in the Catlins rainforest region of the South Island, Purakaunui Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in New Zealand. It is also quite likely the most photographed waterfall (at least on the South Island), but I have never seen a photo captured from this angle.
Bored with the mediocre shots I was capturing from the left edge of the falls where the walking track emerges, I decided to cross the falls to the other side and look for my own unique angle. It was quite precarious with very slippery rocks underneath the water but I made it safely and experimented with a number of angles until I settled on this stunning view. The top of my camera was hard up against the tree branch above but the view was extraordinary, it was like the tree was wrapping it's arms around me while reaching out to these serene falls. A moment I will never forget.
