This would have to be one of my all time favourite Autumn vistas, the world famous tree at Lake Wanaka on the South Island of New Zealand.
After 5 years of repeat visits to the Wanaka Tree every Autumn, I finally captured the photograph I had first envisaged all those years ago. I needed many elements to come together including a high water level around the tree, brilliant autumn colours, reflections on the lake and a soft, colourful sunrise.
Finally it all happened in April 2016 during our 'South Island Colours' group photography workshop. With the growing popularity of the tree, I made sure our group had first choice of the shoot positions by arriving extremely early, wading out and setting our tripods up in the water very close to the tree. It was just on first light but the scene was looking absolutely perfect.
Shortly after assisting the 8 members of our group with their own camera setup and compositions I made my way out a little deeper than everyone else, a little too deep I realised as one of my gum boots filled with icy cold water! A small price to pay for the photo I was about to capture. As the first tinges of pink filled the sky I immediately captured this beautiful 30 second exposure and nailed the photograph I had been chasing all those years.
Thankfully we were the very first people to arrive at the Wanaka Tree but not long after I captured this the crowds started to roll in. When the sun finally broke the horizon my assistant counted no less than 63 photographers! Thankfully they respectfully all setup behind or to the side of our group avoiding any potential conflict.
