I have been working on capturing a shot of the Crown Casino Flames in Melbourne for some time now and found it rather challenging to find a good viewpoint. I had shot this location many years ago without the flames and realised that after many hours of experimenting and research this would actually offer the best vantage point for the flames. I revisited periodically over a number of years and finally on this particular night in October 2011, the light was perfect.
As I shoot medium format film, I was able to use a multiple exposure and captured the first exposure at twilight while there was still some light left in the sky. I then started the second exposure once the flames started firing a few minutes later. This was my first attempt at a multiple exposure and the result is simply magic!
