I was blessed to return to Iceland for the second time in February 2020. I was there to run our very first Ice Cave photography tour, and what an incredible tour it was!
It was a whirlwind trip as I had just spent 2 weeks in Norway and needed to get home to my family immediately after but I had allowed one full day in Reykjavik for some shooting prior to kicking off the tour. I organised a 4WD to explore and capture some waterfalls along the well known Golden Circle. I was joined by long term tour client, print collector, and friend Thomas from Switzerland. We first stopped in at Gullfoss but access to the best part of the falls was closed due to dangerous Winter conditions, so we decided to keep moving.
Bruarfoss was next on my list but Thomas informed me that in recent years tourists had been making a big mess on the privately owned track to the waterfall. In response, the land owners had responded by blocking all access.
Thankfully, a new track had been built from the road but it was now a 7km return hike. I was actually pleased to hear about the hike as this generally means a lot less people will make the effort to visit the falls. Less people means better photo opportunities!
We commenced the hike and passed 2 other falls along the way. It was fairly flat but at this time of year it was covered in slippery ice and snow so we proceeded carefully. Finally, we arrived at Bruarfoss!
The conditions were perfect with just the right amount of flow and stunning colours in the water. Wow, what an incredibly beautiful waterfall!
We spent the next 3 hours photographing the falls from different angles, with the whole place to ourselves. Eventually I decided the best position
was standing right in the middle of the waterfall. I experimented with a few different compositions as the water rushed around my ankles and settled on this one. It was then a matter of waiting for the light.
As the light peaked I captured this unique photo of Bruarfoss, one of Iceland's most beautiful waterfalls, what an incredible experience! |
