Shark Bay is the Australian mecca for Aerial landscape photography. It is an incredibly beautiful region, particularly when viewed from the sky. There are so many colours, shapes and textures to work with, the opportunities are simply endless.
In September 2019, I took a 4 hour flight to Perth then drove north for 8 hours to Shark Bay solo, it was a long travel day! This was a last minute decision as I had plans to catchup with a good friend from New Zealand a couple of days later and head down to Esperance to spend the following week shooting. I only had 2 full days in Shark Bay so had to make the most of it!
While I have done plenty of aerial photography from helicopters with the doors removed, shooting from a light aeroplane was a very new experience for me. The only plane available was a Cessna 172 which is not the best plane for aerial photography. It has a wing strut and wheels that don’t retract so you need to use a telephoto lens and work around the obstacles while hanging out the small window in the buffeting wind.
My second flight was organised for sunset the day after I arrived in Shark Bay. We headed down to Useless Loop, a salt mine that's very popular with Aerial landscape photographers. We spent quite a bit of time shooting the salt mine then as we finished my pilot recommended we spend some time over the nearby sand dunes. It was a great suggestion, when we arrived the last light was falling beautifully across them. I found some dunes that appealed to me and asked the pilot to bank for me. I nailed a couple of compositions but this one was the standout! Can you see the Hare?
