Shark Bay is the Australian mecca for Aerial landscape photography. It is an incredibly beautiful region, particularly when viewed from the sky. There are so many colours, shapes and textures to work with, the opportunities are simply endless.
In September 2019, I took a 4 hour flight to Perth then drove north for 8 hours to Shark Bay solo, it was a long travel day! This was a last minute decision as I had plans to catchup with a good friend from New Zealand a couple of days later and head down to Esperance to spend the following week shooting. I only had 2 full days in Shark Bay so had to make the most of it!
While I have done plenty of aerial photography from helicopters with the doors removed, this was my very first aerial shoot from a plane. The only plane available was a Cessna 172 which is not the best plane for aerial photography. It has a wing strut and wheels that don’t retract so you need to use a telephoto lens and work around the obstacles while hanging out the small window in the buffeting wind.
I did my very first flight at midday the day after I arrived and spent my time shooting Cape Peron and some other area’s of Shark Bay. Before we returned to the airport we took a detour south to an area that’s popular with aerial photographers known as 'The Tree'. It's a small estuary system that yep, looks like a tree! It has beautiful colours and when photographed almost looks like a painting. I nailed this unique composition as we banked over ‘The Tree’ at 2000 feet then returned to the aiport with a huge smile on my face. What an experience! |
