In early 2022 I was visiting our Victorian Gallery to take care of some business matters and managed to find some time for a quick road trip down the Great Ocean Road. I had been watching the weather carefully and could see a window of opportunity for some special light in the region.
The first evening of my trip I decided to head to the remnants of the Island Arch that collapsed back in 2009. Now affectionately referred to as Tom and Eva, the remaining 2 sea stacks have been named after the young survivors of the Loch Ard; a clipper that wrecked nearby back in 1878.
This amazing coastline is ever changing with erosion from the elements causing sea stacks such as the nearby 12 Apostles to collapse and disappear into the ocean. New sea stacks are also formed over time.
Before the arch collapsed I had attempted to capture some special light here on numerous occasions, only to be let down by unfavourable conditions.
I was extremely disappointed when it collapsed and felt that it was no longer worth shooting. It's always good to reassess our beliefs from time to time though and after visiting again in recent years I decided that it was definately worth another go.
As I walked up the track to the lookout the sun was nearing the horizon and creating some beautiful back lighting behind the sea stacks. I setup my gear and composed this shot just in time to capture this single shot as the sun lit up the entire scene. Immediately after I had captured my shot, the light dropped too low and the foreground went into shadow. I had arrived just in time!
