It was -7 degrees when the alarm went off at 3am and I had come down with a cold overnight but I know there are no prizes for laziness.
I had been working on this shot for over a year and had been watching the conditions at Cradle Mountain carefully for the past 2 months, clearing my schedule and booking a last minute flight when the forecasted conditions had presented themselves.
I
jumped out of bed, put on my thermals, outer layers, gloves and neoprene waders then scraped the ice off the windscreen, climbed into the 4wd and headed up the slippery, icy road to Dove Lake.
Thankfully, as predicted the conditions were perfect when I arrived, clear skies, no moon and reflections on the lake. Other than the wombats, wallabies and potoroos, I had the entire place to myself.
The pathway to the lake was like an ice skating rink; I almost slipped over a couple of times before opting to trudge through the snow instead. I made my way to the lakes edge, to the rocks I had discovered many years earlier.
The moon was set to rise at 5am so by the time I had waded into the lake and setup I only had an hour to capture the image.
The scene before me was amazing, the stars reflecting beautifully on the calm waters of Dove Lake.
With no moon, composing my photo was difficult; it was a matter of pointing my camera in the right direction, taking a long exposure, moving the tripod, tweaking the composition and repeating this process many times until it was just right.
While standing in the lake, a third of my bottled water had turned to ice. My other camera’s and lenses sitting on the shore had also accumulated a thick layer of ice.
What an incredible experience, I had to push the camera to its absolute limits but I had finally nailed the shot of Cradle Mountain I had been chasing for over a year! |
