Eilean Donan Castle is quite likely Scotland's most famous landmark. It has featured in James Bond and Highlander movies and is easily recognised by most people around the world. Many believe that Eilean Donan is the most beautiful castle in all of Scotland.
Eilean Donan Castle was high on my list of target locations during my 2013 photographic expedition across the United Kingdom. What I didn't realise until my arrival was that it is situated on a tidal loch, not a lake. The tides are quite large and have a major impact on the potential for capturing the photograph that I was after.
My first visit to Eilean Donan was on a low tide and I quickly realised that this was a mistake. There was practically no water surrounding the island which meant the beautiful reflections that sometimes surround Eilean Donan were nowhere to be seen. It was clear that I was going to have to come back again in a couple of weeks time. This was really going to mess up my itinerary!
I spent the next 5 days visiting the nearby Isle of Skye and focused my attention on other locations instead. Then we headed 9 hours south all the way to Wales to catch up with family
and sign, title and number a stack of prints that had accumulated during my travels - to send off to waiting collector's.
Almost a week later, the tides were just right so we made the 9 hour drive north again, back to Eilean Donan Castle. Now I just needed a colourful sunrise or sunset in conjunction with calm weather (no wind). It took 4 more attempts but finally it all came together, a sky as colourful as any I had witnessed during my time in Scotland painting a perfect backdrop for my pre-visualised photograph.
The result speaks for itself and has now been released in a small, highly collectible edition of only 5 prints.
