After our October 2010 'Taste Of The Tropics' workshop I allowed 3 days to get in some shooting for myself. Although it was coming up to the end of the dry season, conditions were ideal for shooting the nearby waterfalls and rainforest. They had experienced plenty of rain recently which meant the rainforest was green and there was plenty of water flowing over all the falls. On the final day of our trip, with overcast weather forecast I decided to get up nice and early and spend the entire day shooting waterfalls and rainforest scenes.

This particular waterfall is one that I have had my eye on visiting for some years now but was never able to figure out how to get there. It was last on our list for the day and we had real trouble finding the start of the track. We eventually found it and learnt that it was a 5km return trip which would not be easy with 20kg of camera gear on our backs and in such high humidity. To top it off just as we commenced the walk it started raining!

The rain had eased to drizzle when we finally arrived at the waterfall and I was absolutely amazed at the beauty of this place. The waterfall is deep in thick rainforest and you cannot hear any sounds except wildlife and running water. You feel like you could be thousands of miles from any civilization.

Well after taking a moment to absorb the incredible scene in front of me, I realised it was about an hour before sunset which meant I had to work quickly if I wanted to capture it! My exposures were getting close to 5 minutes when I checked my light meter so I only had time to capture 4 different shots before I called it a day, settling on this one as my favourite.

The journey back out of the forest was exciting, racing against the clock as darkness descended. We arrived back at the car in near darkness and my assistant managed to pickup a decent sized leech along the way at one of the many river crossings.
