Western Australia's tailing ponds make incredible photos when captured from the sky. Used by the refineries to store waste after seperating the minerals from the rock, the Iron Ore tailings are particularly colourful.
It was the final day of my late 2019 whirlwind trip to Western Australia with a good friend from New Zealand. We had decided a few days earlier to organise an aerial shoot of the amazing tailing ponds to see what we could find.
We chartered a Cessna 210 and had the door removed on one side of the plane so we could both shoot freely without obstacles. This was the first time I had flown in a plane without a door, wow what an experience!
We took off just as the sun was rising and spent the next couple of hours flying at different altitudes and exploring a variety of tailing ponds at a few refineries.
As the plane banked over this one, I could see this amazing pattern of colours in the pond, I captured this shot and just knew I had nailed something special!
We returned to the airport shortly afterwards and just as the plane touched down our engine stalled! The pilot apologised and said that they'd been having problems with the engine lately! He managed to get it restarted and taxied back to where we began. Thankfully it happened when we were back on solid ground!
