I had known about The Pinnacles for over 5 years before I was able to visit and shoot them. They are on the western side of Australia, over 3500km from where I live and despite visiting Perth a couple of times (only a 3 hour drive from the Pinnacles) I never had the chance to make the journey.

Well finally, during my third trip to Western Australia I made sure that I allowed enough time to go and visit The Pinnacles. When I arrived I felt like I had landed on the moon! The desert like landscape is filled with hundreds of these incredible limestone pillars, some almost twice as tall as me.

I knew from experience that dusk and dawn would offer the best light however the first evening was overcast and raining. The next morning was the same, so I spent many hours exploring the huge area that they reside in and worked on a number of compositions that I could return to shoot.

Normally when I visit a location I am quickly drawn to one particular angle that I decide will work best. At The Pinnacles however you are spoilt for choice which made it particularly challenging to decide on a favourite composition. In the end it came down to predicting which direction the light would come from at sunrise and sunset which helped me to decide where to go at those times.

The rain clouds cleared by late afternoon on the second day and I captured some nice light at sunset but in the end I wasn't entirely satisfied with my chosen composition. The next morning I prayed for some even better light and arrived at The Pinnacles a good hour before sunrise so I could explore even more and find a better composition. After wandering through the pinnacles for an hour I still hadn't been particularly inspired, however the light began to pierce the horizon and suddenly the place was transformed. I was immediately drawn to this group of rocks and captured a number of different angles. This shot was my favourite and if you look very carefully you can just see the ocean in the distance.
