I had the pleasure of staying down the Great Ocean Road with my family in early 2016. We stayed in Princetown near the 12 Apostles on a dedicated work trip (not a holiday) so I was out shooting with every single opportunity that presented itself!
Earlier this particular night I did my usual evening ritual, heading to a nearby lookout to scope out the potential for a sunset but was greeted with clear skies as far as the eye could see. I knew instantly that the sunset wouldn't be worth shooting but decided that there could be a great opportunity to capture the Milky Way over the 12 Apostles later that night if conditions allowed. I checked the time of astronomical twilight and also the moonrise to make sure that I would be able to capture the night sky in all it's glory.
I then organised dinner for the family and headed back to our accommodation to wait patiently until the sky was dark enough to shoot.
Later that night when my family were tucked up in bed, I headed back down to the 12 Apostles lookout. By then it was close to midnight and apart from a couple enjoying some romantic quiet time nearby, I had the entire place to myself.
I spent a couple of hours working the scene in the dark and finally settled on this unique photo of the 12 Apostles with all the glory of the Milky Way above.
When reviewing the photograph, I was pleasantly surprised to have captured the colours of a suspected Aurora on the horizon, or perhaps it was just light reflecting off the lingering sea mist? I guess we will never know.
